Hello My Name Is...
Amy Jones
I am the English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at all three Northumberland County schools. ESL is a program to give support to students and their families who speak a language other than English in their home. The level of support varies depending on the students' English proficiency. I work with students inside their regular classrooms or in small groups outside of their core classes.
The best part of my job is working with our Spanish-speaking families. I started learning Spanish when I traveled with my husband to Valdivia, Chile in 1992, and by living in Asturias, Spain and Miami, Florida. I have a BA in history from Bates College and took classes at the University of Colorado-Boulder for teaching English as a foreign language. After working as a copy editor and teaching English classes in Santiago, Chile, I started the Career Switcher Program to become a teacher in Virginia.
I have been the ESL teacher since 2009 and truly enjoy working with the ELL students and their families.
