A Day of Discovery: The NHS JROTC Maritime Expedition to Fort Eustis

On March 12, 2026, the NHS JROTC Cadets embarked on an immersive maritime journey to Fort Eustis, VA. gaining a firsthand look at the unique and vital waterborne capabilities of the U.S. Army. The trip was designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world military career paths, focusing specifically on the specialized world of Army Watercraft.

Diving into Army Maritime Careers

The highlight of the tour was the expert guidance provided by CW3 Toomey, CW3 Beck and their team. These Chief Warrant Officers provided a compelling look into the lives of 88L (Watercraft Engineer) and 88K (Watercraft Operator) Soldiers.

Hands-on Learning: Cadets stood on the pier before the towering CW3 Harold C. Clinger, where they learned about the immense responsibility of navigating and maintaining these Vessels that provide logistical support globally.

Engine Room Insights: The tour moved indoors to the industrial heart of the operation. Under a sign mandating hearing protection, the cadets observed the complex machinery and engine systems that power the Army's fleet, illustrating the technical skill required for the 88L MOS.

Seamless Coordination and a "Feast" at the DFAC

A trip of this magnitude requires precision logistics, and we owe a massive thank you to Senior Airman Ellis. Her coordination ensured seamless base access and managed all the necessary requirements so the focus could remain entirely on the cadets' education.

To fuel the day's excitement, the group visited the Fort Eustis Dining Facility (DFAC). Under the "Fort Eustis" mural, the cadets enjoyed what can only be described as a true feast. The relaxed atmosphere of the DFAC allowed the cadets to bond over their shared experiences and discuss the career possibilities they had just witnessed.

Impact and Inspiration

From the windy piers beside the gray hulls of the fleet to the technical briefings in the maintenance bays, the day was a resounding success. The cadets left with a much deeper understanding of the "Blue Water" Army and the professional opportunities that await them.
