Northumberland Elementary School Received
2009 Governor's Award for Educational Excellence.
The Governor's Award for Educational Excellence is the highest honor under the Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) incentive program created by the Board of Education in 2007 to advance Governor Kaine's "competence to excellence" agenda promoting advanced learning and achievement.
Northumberland Elementary School was one of only 153 Virginia public schools to have earned this award in 2010. To qualify for the Governor's Award for Educational Excellence, NES had to meet all state and federal achievement benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and achieve applicable excellence goals for elementary reading and participation in the Virginia Preschool Initiative. Board of Education President Mark E. Emblidge said, "The criteria for these awards goes beyond test scores and includes student outcomes and best practices in areas that support learning."
The Governor's Award for Educational Excellence presented to Northumberland Elementary School for the second consecutive year is a direct result of our community, School Board, students, staff, parents, and government officials working together to insure the success of all our children.
