Message from Superintendent Clint Stables As you may have heard, a new influenza virus, the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus, was first identified in the United States in late April 2009. The virus has caused illness ranging from mild to severe, including hospitalizations and deaths in adults and children. Many children have gotten the 2009 H1N1 infection and there have been large outbreaks in some schools across the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended that children and young adults aged 6 months through 24 years be vaccinated against 2009 H1N1 as soon as the vaccine is available. Other groups recommended to get the first available doses of the vaccine include:
Vaccination is the best way to protect your child from this potentially serious disease. The Northumberland County Health Department is working with us to give the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine to children at school. We will hold a vaccination clinic the beginning of November. We will let you know the specific date once vaccine is available. The nasal mist preparation will be used for all eligible children and the injectable preparation will also be available. Links on this website have information about the disease and the vaccine for you to download. Please complete the consent form and return it to school by November 6th. If the consent form is not returned, the vaccination will not be given to your child. Children under the age of 10 are expected to need two does of vaccine spaced about 4 weeks apart. Subsequent clinics for children needing a booster doese will be scheduled at a later date. There will be no cost to you for this vaccine. If you have any questions about the vaccine or the vaccination clinic, please call the Northumberland County Health Department from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please visit the CDC's 2009 H1N1 influenza website at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu and also http://www.cdc.gov/hn1flu/parents for information especially for parents. Your child's healthcare provider also can answer your questions. They will be able to give your child the seasonal influenza vaccine and may be able to give your child the 2009 H1N1 vaccine.

Northumberland County Teachers Participate in CBF's Smith Island Program
Teachers from Northumberland County participated in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Smith Island program during their inservice work days. They spent three days and two nights learning about the bay and the people who make their living by working the water. They visited the field stations at Fox Island and Port Isobel to see the unique opportunities offered at each. It was an unforgetable experience and all involved left with a new understanding of the bay and their colleagues. |
