Integrating Technology to Improve Student Achievement

 TAGXEDO

If you've ever used Wordle, then you will have a blast with Tagxedo! Find a simple photo, then copy text related to that topic.  With a little tweaking, the words create the image.  Imagine teaching about Lincoln and outlining his silhouette with the Gettysburg Address or Martin Luther King and using his I Have a Dream speech. How about Albert Einstein and an some of his quotes?  What if you were learning about a country and used an article to make its borders. Kindergarten students could make the letters they are learning by filling them with words beginning with that letter.   If Math students are learning about different types of triangles, they could fill them with text about their properties.  Science students learning about biomes could find a simple illustration from a particular biome and fill it with words about the characteristics of it.  The possibilities are endless!

Interactive SMART Board Lessons or Activities

Of all the requests I have from the teachers in my county, one of the most frequent is for SMARTBoard lessons.  Scholastic has one of the best websites for interactive white board activities.  Instead of having to cull through the good, the bad, and the ugly, the best ones are here for you to access FREE!

If you haven't checked out United Streaming lately, you really have to see their new look.  The link is www.discoveryeducation.com .  Let me know if you need your username and/or password.  Imagine how awesome your educational video clips will look on those 52 inch plasma screens!!!! I still recommend that you download them instead of streaming them because of the bandwidth.  Students taking online benchmark tests could be bumped off if everyone decided to stream at the same time.  Consider posting video clips on your website.  It's easy to do!  Let me show you how!

ThinkQuest  www.thinkquest.org

ThinkQuest is an awesome website to use for collaborating on group projects! Students may collaborate with other students around the world on this secure site.  It is offered to Virginia teachers through the DOE and the Oracle Foundation. I've used it to do research on competition topics with my Future Problem Solving students who are at three different schools.  I would highly recommend this resource.  It is free but I will have to give you a username and password.  After you are in the system, you may add your students.  Check out the library to see what students have done!  Please email me if you are interested.

Talk about motivation!!!  You and your students will LOVE this site!  I did a workshop  at the VA DOE this summer and they are encouraging Virginia teachers to use this with their classes. The Internet Safety videos, lessons, activities, and games are terrific! Let me know if I can help!
