Future Problem Solving of Virginia

Academically gifted students who love to write and thrive on thinking out of the box are strongly encouraged to join one of our FPS teams.  We meet every Thursday until 4:30.  Students will compete three times a year in this international competition.  One of our teams will go to the State Bowl in the spring.  Please check out the FPS website for more background information.  Because so many of our team members have expressed a desire to attempt Scenario Writing, this year NMS & NHS ATAG students will also be able to meet with Mrs. Alderman for FPS Scenario Writing during the Thursday FPS meetings.     Our Scenario Writers will also be piloting a new online writing program called My Access which they will be able to utilize 24 hours a day.  The program has an advanced level which will allow the students to fine-tune their writing skills according to the needs of each individual.

ATAG After School

Students who have been identified as Academically or Artistically Gifted are encouraged to stay for ATAG After School on every other Tuesday afternoon until 4:30.  Each year the group explores a new topic and then goes on a culminating field trip.  In past years, ATAG After School participants have been whale-watching and spelunking.  In order to go on the field trip, students must attend most of the meetings unless participating in sports or other after school activities.

Johns Hopkins Talent Search

7th graders who have scored Advanced Proficiency on the 5th grade SOL tests or have a 97% on a nationally-normed test may be eligible to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.s).  This off-level test allows our exceptional students to be recognized for their strengths and the opportunity to attend workshops around the United States.  Northumberland County Schools will pay both the Talent Search and SAT fees.  However, the parents of the qualifying students are responsible for making sure their children arrive at the assigned testing location for the January SAT test.
