COURSE TITLE: Leadership, Education and Training (LET)
OFFICE HOURS: Monday - Friday (0730 - 1730). Instructors are available, with advance notification, to meet with a student or parent/guardian at times other than those listed above.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Leadership, Education and Training will focus primarily on increasing self-esteem, developing responsibility, as well as discipline. This will be done by exploring areas of citizenship, communication, leadership development, physical fitness, map reading, marksmanship, drill and ceremonies, inspections, military history, drug and alcohol awareness, and key health issues. JROTC is not designed to teach military combat skills or serve as a recruiting tool for military service. The lessons learned and the experience gained as a member of the program will be useful in any career choice.
COURSE GOALS: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Brief the JROTC program, mission and curriculum. 2. Utilize the seven skills of communications. 3. Apply leadership principles and theory. 4. Develop a personal fitness program and proper diet. 5. Perform basic military drills, customs and courtesies. 6. Perform basic life-saving steps, to include CPR. 7. Utilize a map (civilian and military). 8. Exhibit a greater sense of citizenship, leadership and responsibility. 9. Discuss the Constitution, its purpose, development and amendments. 10. Apply basic marksmanship and safety skills. 11. Discuss the dangers of drug, alcohol and tobacco use. 12. Achieve a higher sense of self-esteem and team concept.
CONDUCT OF THE COURSE: This course will be conducted using a variety of methods. There will be lectures, but the majority of the time will be spent either in group discussion, individual and group projects, and practical application exercises. Students will be given reading assignments, homework, out of class projects and examination.
STUDENT PREPARATION: Students come to-class prepared. This includes being prepared to actively participate in class discussions, having all instructional material when arriving in-class, insuring that they have a pen (black or blue ink), pencil and paper to write on. Additionally appropriate clothing will be worn for physical training days.
NEEDED MATERIALS: 3-Ring hinder and a Journal notebook.
Homework, other than daily reading requirements, will be given, as the instructor deems necessary. Any homework given will be graded. Any item that is to be turned in will have the following information written/printed legibly in the upper left hand corner of an 8 1/2’ x 11” piece of notebook paper as shown: Last Name, First Name Period Date
ATTENDANCE: Regular class attendance is an essential part of the learning process and is necessary to insure a fair and accurate assessment is made as to comprehension of material. School board policy 7-15 permits students with excused absences to make up assignments. The student has at least one school day for each day of excused absence to complete and hand in work.
MISCONDUCT: Integrity and honor are virtues that define an individual’s character and must not be compromised under any circumstance. Cheating in any form will not be tolerated, this includes making false excuses for failure to do well on tests, turn in homework, or be present in class or other required duties.
STUDENT ATTIRE: Students will be in compliance with school policy as it relates to the wear of civilian clothing.
UNIFORM WEAR: Cadets will wear the JTROTC uniform once a week. The scheduled day is Thursday. When in the .JROTC uniform students will comply with AR 670-1 at all times, in and out of JROTC class. Uniform inspections will be graded. If absent on uniform day that cadet will wear the uniform within the week of returning back to school to make up for missed uniform wear days. Failure to wear the uniform three times in a marking period will result in an “F” for that quarter. CADETS WILL NOT WEAR THE UNIFORM IF ASSIGNED TO ISS.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: JROTC offers students several opportunities to become involved in outside the classroom, such as Color Guard, Military Police, Drill Team (10 various teams), Rifle Team, various community service projects, fundraising and other special projects.

COUNSELING: The instructor will-counsel all cadets at least every six weeks. This counseling will be done to assess progress in JROTC, determine-if there are problems outside the JROTC classroom that can be solved, and provide the cadet the opportunity to ask-for assistance or extra help. Progress reports on academic issues will be sent home in accordance with school policy. Parent / guardian conferences may be requested by the instructor, the student, or the parent / guardian.
